This
is a black and white drawing representing the hardwork of slaves then
in the center the happiness they feel when they know they are free.
This is a newspaper headline announcing and celebrating the Emancipation Proclamation.
This is a painting of a Union soldier reading the Emancipation Proclamation to a room of slaves and their children.
This is a painting of the first readingof The Emancipation Proclamation.
This is the first page of the Emancipation Proclamation stating that the slaves were free.
For my second quilt square I did the Emancipation Proclamation. In my quilt piece there is the United States is split up into three sections. The top section is the North the middle section are the border states and the bottom section is the South. In the North there is Abraham Lincoln because he was the one who created the Emancipation Proclamation. There is also a person representing the free African Americans in the North. In the border states there are people chained to the ground representing how slaves in the border states were not free. In the South there are people with broken chains representing the free slaves. In the South Texas is outlined with the Emancipation Proclamation inside a circle crossed out and a "shh" beside it representing how the slave owners in Texas kept the Emancipation Proclamation a secret from their slaves. Over the whole United States there is a a quote from the Emancipation Proclamation saying "That all persons held as slaves within the rebellious states are, and henceforward shall be free" This quote is saying that the Emancipation Proclamation only applied to the states that had seceded from the Union. Behind the United States there is the Emancipation Proclamation showing you that the quilt square is about the Emancipation Proclamation.
