clay's artist statement: me and arturo's quilt square is about when slavery in the united states was ended.it was ended in 1865 by the 13th amendment, and former slaves were given other rights such as citizenship and the right to vote by the 14th and 15th amendment.our quilt square shows a black man shaking hands with a white man. this is because white people did help a lot to end slavery. although slaves were freed it took a while for white people and black people to get along so my quilt square wasn't very realistic in some situations. they were still segregated but it was a huge step forward in the u.s.a when they freed slaves.
