Deborah's class- Amanda, African Americans in the office.

After the slaves were freed 1/5 of the african americans represented the south's office holders




In 1992 Carol Moseley Braun was the first
African american female to become senator
In total there were 22 in congress: 20 of them were in the house and 2 of them were in the senate. Many of the african americans had been born slaves.
Hiram Revels was the first African American to become
Senator. It was in 1870

Barack Obama was the first African American  to become president in the U.S

Edward Brooke was the first african american senator
to be chosen by popular vote (1967-1979)
