freemen's bureau-Amy and Miette, Sarah's office

Amy's artist statement.

The freemen's bureau was established by the government on March third 1865 to assist newly freed slaves by giving out food, housing, education, health care, employment contracts and sometimes even free land to African families. It was in operation from 1865-1871. On June ninth 1867 one of the freemen's bureau headquarters was attacked by angry white men who believed that it wasn't fair that slaves got free food, education and housing. They thought that the slaves belonged nowhere but in the fields working the cotton crops. The bureau helped over one million slaves. My quilt square shows the first freemen's bureau grand opening in 1865.
