The Fourteenth Amendment- Coyle and Julia- Sarahs Class

Julia's Artist Statement..
For our quilt square we drew a symbol that says "We Shall Overcome". The reason we chose to do this is because lots of people part of the members of the freedom organization for many years. The reason we choose to research the 14 amendment was because it said that former slaves were given the rights to citizenship. The amendment said that "no state could deny the equal protection of laws" and that it gives all former slaves "Life, liberty or property". The reason we drew the "We Shall Overcome" is because there were slaves that had fought for what they had believed was right and they got their rights eventually.

Coyle's Artist Statement
For our quilt square we researched the 14th Amendment. The drawing is a pin that as worn by members of the freedom organization. The 14h Amendment declared that all former slaves were now citizens with full citizen rights. This pin really symbolized the fight that the african americans put through the whole time and how they got through the war with hardship but eventually overcame and became an equal.
