Artist Statement, Native Americans in the Civil War -Dezmond Douglas-Deborah

The quilt square is a picture with two Native Americans in it. On the left there is a Union  Native American soldiers that has the Union flag in the back round. The soldier is a mercenary even though he is fighting for the Union army. On the right there is a Confederate Native American with a Confederate battle flag in the back round. There is a line going through the picture to represent the segregation that split our country a part. The reason me and my partner made two Native Americans instead of one Native American and one white person is to show how not only Whites were fighting against each other, but so were Natives. The reason it says Even to today Native Americans don't trust the white man. This is to show how the White man poisoned the Natives with alcohol.
