Artist Statement-Haile McIntosh-Fort Pillow

Our quilt square is based on the Battle at Fort Pillow. The red river helps to represent the words spoken by Nathan Bedford Forrest, confederate general during this battle. "The river was dyed with the blood of the slaughtered for 200 yards." This brutal massacre took place on a bluff near the Mississippi river, the forts location, as shown in our piece. Most of the victims being of a colored troop, had been burned in piles, thrown to the river, or shot after surrender. Forrest, the beginner of this bloody assault based upon his racial hatred, went on to become the founder of the KKK. (Ku Klux Klan) The fist symbol on our piece is holding a lynched women, result of the KKK. This Klan is still active today in their public rallies and have representatives in our government.
