54th Regiment - Elvis, Alex B & Coyle - Sarah's Class

Coyle's Artist Statement
For our quilt square Elvis, Alex B. and i researched the 54th Regiment of the American Civil War. Our quilt represents the black soldiers fighting to free the slaves. It appears the soldier is shooting the man but he is actually pointing his gun at the handcuffs symbolizing him freeing the slaves. This event was a big deal in the civil war because it was the first time african americans were given guns to fight for their beliefs. Today slavery in the United States is totally abolished and those who fought against slavery back then greatly impacted the result.

Elvis's Artist Statement
our quilt square is a african american soldier shooting the handcuffs off of another african american. this represents how african american soldiers went to the  south to get slaves and bring them to the north. this made it so there were more african american soldiers.

Alex's Artist Statement
this quilt piece shows a black solider part of the 54th regiment aiming his gun at the handcuffs of a black slave. this shows that the black army helped free the black slaves.
