Heath Artist Statement, Deborah

Isaac and I are focusing on the Telegraph during the civil war.
The Pacific Telegraph Act 1860 was an Act to bring communication between the
East and west Coasts of the United States. Benjamin Franklin Ficklin and Hiram Sibley teamed up to create the Pacific Telegraph Company of Nebraska. Jeptha Wade was  asked by Hiram Sibley to establish smaller Telegraph Companies in California.
While the Pacific Telegraph Company built west from Omaha, Nebraska, the Overland Telegraph Company of California was then created, and built east from
Carson City, Nevada. With a connection to Salt Lake City, Utah, on October 24th 1861, the link between the East and West coasts of the US was completed by Telegraph.
Our quilt square shows two places transmitting information through telegraph, while the info travels through forests, over rivers, and past battles. The Telegraph also brought new ideas for future communication methods.
