Heath Artist Statement, Deborah

Ian and I focused on the Dred Scott Case in 1858. Dred Scott and his wife Harriet were slaves of Dr. John Emerson in St. Lois, Missouri. After John Emerson died, Dred Scott tried to buy his freedom from John's wife, Irene Sanford. But his request was turned down by her. With yet no freedom, in 1846 Dred Scott filed a legal suit in the St. Lois circuit court with the help of a lawyer. At firsts the trial went against him, but a retrial was held due to rumor. In 1850, a Missouri jury concluded that Dred Scott and his wife should be granted freedom since they were illegally held as slaved during their lengthened residence in the free jurisdiction states of Illinois and Wisconsin. Our flag piece has black slaves cowering under a large court mallet with a white owner riding the mallet, this resembles the struggles of slaves filing cases in court, and the superiority of their owners.
