clay's artist statement:
my quilt square is about diseases and doctors in the civil war. disease was the cause of the most deaths in the civil war. back then doctors didn't have very good tools for healing people, and they usually didn't even wash their hands in between tending to injured and sick people. our quilt shows people shoveling dead people into a pit. many of those people died from disease. they also used saws to amputate injured people and that exposed their wounds to disease and infection.
