Secession From the Union- Abby O'Brien- Deborah's Class

In our quilt square the background is the Bill Of Rights.  The country is divided into two parts, the north and the south.  The south is shown as having chains dragging it down.  The chains represent slavery and how the rest of the country was moving forward beyond slavery but the south was being held back by its need for free labor.  At the top is Abraham Lincoln saying “Shh!”  This is because another one of the reasons the South seceded is because when Lincoln was elected they thought that since he was considered and abolitionist he wouldn’t listen to them or include them.  The 10th Amendment is highlighted because that is the right that the south was the most worried about being taken away from them.  This is still an issue.  For example Tennessee recently tried to get out of things that are laws in the country.  They tried to say  that things that are made and sold in the state should not apply to country laws. Like firearms made and sold in the state would not have to be registered.  The piece as a whole represents how the country was torn apart by secession and that the southern states felt alienated by the north’s different views.
