Dawson's Artist Statement
My quilt piece is about the Mexican war, and how America stole Mexico’s land and is currently doing it. On one side it shows someone from the American side of the border shaking hands with the Mexican side. This symbolizes America making deals with Mexico and moving companies like Coca Cola, Nike, and Microsoft into Mexico. On the other side it shows someone on the American side pointing a gun at someone on the Mexican side. This symbolizes Americans keeping Mexicans out of Mexico, often by force, while Mexicans gladly let American companies in. I feel it’s an ironic story. After the Mexican war, Americans had new land. This caused people to wonder whom the land belonged to. This is one of the many sparks that caused the civil war.

  1. Tiani’s artist statement

This piece depicts the US/Mexico border. On the left side the United States is shaking hands with Mexico; on the right they’re pointing a gun. This represents the Mexican war of 1846. The shaking hands represent the US helping to settle Texas and the gun represents the US going to war with Mexico over the territory. This piece also represents what is still going on today. The shaking hands represent the US outsourcing businesses and factories to Mexico and the gun represents The US fighting Mexican immigrants. The reason this is relevant to the civil war is that the US had to decide weather or not to have the new territories slave states or free states.
