Artist's statement Sarah Rose Ezelle Deborah's class

Our topic for our first quilt square is secession from the union. For our quilt square we decided to print out a map of the United States and cut it into two parts so that the Southern and Northern states were separated. We glued the pieces on opposite sides of the paper. Chains are pulling the south down to symbolize slavery. Aberaham Lincoln is holding the North up to show how he unintentionally pulled the nation apart. In the back ground you can see the Bill Of Rights. The square focuses on  the Tenth Amendment because slavery and whether it is legal in a certain state is for the individual state to decide. Slavery is one of the main reasons Southern states seceded. They thought Lincoln would abolish slavery. It took years for The States to come back together as one.
