Elvis Ian and Andrew - Sarah's Office

The topic that I and my partner chose to do a quilt square about was the Kansas Nebraska act. The Kansas Nebraska act is the act that made it so the south was slave states and the north was Free states. Our art piece finally ended up looking like a jagged line and below it the word south was in red so it basically looked like hell with devil people and burning houses with people in chains. However in the north the word north looked fancy with a cross in the middle of the paper and everyone has wings. This represents that the south was horrible because they kept slaves and treated them very harshly but in the north the slaves were cheering and everyone so great for not having slaves.

andrews artist statement
the kansas nebraska act made it so the settlers in a certain territory could decide whether to allow slavery or not in their boundaries. our quilt piece symbolizes the differences of the north and south. for the south it shows what some might discribe as hell with african-american slaves chained up being whipped by white people, with things burning around it. they south shows angels smiling with african-americans running free a sun and trees and flowers.
