The Artist Statement of Alex Harris
The Battle of Fort Sumter was the last straw for the American government. This historic battle is the battle that started the American Civil War.The battle lasted for 2 days, with the fort being hit with an average of 2,800 shells per day. The casualties were two dead on the Unoin side, and 3 wounded on the Confederate side. The battle ended with a Confederate victory.
The large man in the background who appears to be ripping apart the nation is Ares, who, as you probably already know, is the Greek god of war. He is in this image because he symbolizes war.
I made this image to send a message to you all This war wasn't just something you read about in a school textbook, forget most everything about, and bring up now and again in casual conversation. This was an actual war, a huge war, a war that changed a country, a war that cost us 625,000 lives, promising lives, obscure, but crucially important lives.
If you type in the name of an infantryman from the Civil War you are related to or heard of from family friends on an online search engine or library database, and chances are you won't find anything about them but a name on a recruiting registry, or nothing at all. This is why the soldiers in the image have no faces.
Thank you for reading my Artist's Statement, and thank you for looking at my picture.
Have A Good Day, Y'all!
Alex Harris
