Union and Confederate Generals from the Civil War.. Julia and Deva

Deva's Artist statement.
Julia and I did our quilt square about 2 generals during the civil war. We chose to compare Ulysses Grant a union general and Robert E. Lee a confederate general. Grant was a commanding leader for the last year of the civil war. He was elected president in 1869 and he wasn't well known for the beginning of the war. He was the 18th president. Robert Lee was a southerner that was against slavery. He was considered one of the greatest military leaders in the U.S

For our quilt square, Deva and I researched generals that played a role during the civil war. We researched Robert E. Lee and Ulysses Grant. Ulysses Grant was the commanding general for the Union for the last year of the war. He wasn't well known at the beginning of the war but was eleted President of the United States in 1869. Grant was a sloppy dresser who didn't take care of his uniform, he smoked and was believed to be an alcoholic. Robert E. Lee was the confederate General from the beginning to the end of the war. He graduated from West Point Military Academy, he was a southerner against slavery and he is considered one of the greatest military leaders of U.S. history.

  1. It's interesting that Robert E Lee went to Westpoint even though he fought for the South.
