Female Spies-Julia Glancy-Deborah's Class

Artist Statement

Our quilt square is on women spies in the Civil War.The words female spies is printed across the top of our quilt square. The half man half woman shows how some female spies disguised themselves as men. Some women were credited with the victory of a battle. Female spies were recognized for their work during the Civil War.The CIA symbol shows how women are now working for places like the CIA. Women are being recognized for the work that they do today. A lot has changed since the Civil War.

boyd.jpg (30709 bytes)Belle Boyd was a Confederate spy. She was arrested twice for spying.









Rose O'Neal Greenhow was a Confederate spy during the Civil War. She is credited with the Confederates victory of the battle of Bull Run. She would hide information about the war in the bun of a womans hair.



















 
Sarah Thompson passed information to Union officers. She gave information to the Union about where Confederate General John Hunt Morgan was. Later she became a nurse in the Civil War.
 Loreta Velazquez fought in the war and was also a spy for the confederacy. After her husband died she enlisted in to fight. She fought disguised as a man. When spying she disguised herself and used different names.

Nancy Hart was a Confederate spy during the Civil War. She would go behind Union lines with supplies and get information from the soldiers.
