Artist Statement
In
this quilt piece, there is a chain on the southern side that is broken. This symbolizes the end of
slavery. There are two figures
walking through that are heading to the other side. These figures represent the freed African Americans. They are migrating to other Northern
cities. The boat down at the
bottom shows some of the African Americans that sailed back to places in
Africa. After slavery ended, many
stayed in the South, and many moved up North. If they hadn’t moved over more of the country then, there
might be less diversity in the Northern states in the present.
