Second Artist statement, Families of the south, Colleen W. Deborah's class

My quilt square is on the Families of the South.
I used a primary document in my quilt square, because I could not do my subject justice. I chose a photo of a family leaving their plantation to avoid war. I felt that this was a moving photo as it shows a dejected family leaving their plantation that they had lived on and off of for years of their lives.

I made the whole quilt in black and white so that the red border would draw attention to it. I had a difficult time with this topic at first mostly because I was trying to find the facts and statements about families. Once I did this I almost found too much information.

I chose this topic because I wanted to learn more about southern families. You never really hear their side of the war. I am glad that I chose this topic because it was surprisingly fun to write about and research. I can't wait to do the next one.
